Men’s Mental Health Awareness
June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health struggles can affect emotional, physical, relational, and spiritual well-being. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), nearly 20% of men live with some form of mental illness annually. While men are less likely to report depression than women, they are four times more likely to die by suicide, making it a critical focus for federal health initiatives. About 10% of men report experiencing symptoms of depression annually, but fewer than half receive any formal treatment.
Women can support men in several ways.
Carry burdens together. Galatians 6:2 - Carry each other's burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ. Your support means walking alongside him. Help him with responsibilities when he feels overwhelmed. Offer companionship rather than pressure. Show grace during his difficult moments.
Be a source of encouragement by speaking life. 1 Thessalonians 5:11- Therefore encourage one another and build each other up. Remind him of his identity in Christ rather than allowing his struggles to define him. Inform him that his struggles do not diminish his worth. God loves him and has not abandoned him.
Let him know there is hope. Psalm 23:4 -Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me. He is loved and valued. God walks with him through every valley.
Practice grace and patience. 1 Corinthians 13:4 - Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. Healing is often a journey. There may be setbacks and progress may be slow, but your love and compassion will help him through.
Pray and study God’s word together. Pray for God's peace, wisdom, strength, and healing. 1 Peter 5:7 - Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.
Meditate on scriptures that bring hope and peace. Philippians 4:6-7 – God's peace guards our hearts and minds.
Ask God to give you wisdom to know when to listen, patience when the journey is difficult, and compassion that reflects His love. Ask for help to encourage rather than criticize, support rather than control, and guidance for direction toward hope and healing.
