The LEAP Approach

Mental Health Awareness Month is an opportunity to begin to practice listening with compassion and walking alongside one another.

The goal isn’t to win an argument—it’s to build trust, strengthen relationships, and create a path toward hope and support.

When someone you care about is struggling, connection often begins with understanding.

The LEAP approach, developed by Dr. Xavier Amador, encourages us to:

1)Listen without judgment

2)Empathize with their feelings and experiences

3)Agree on shared goals and concerns

4)Partner together on next steps

Many people feel unheard, judged, or isolated. The simple act of listening and empathizing can have a powerful impact. We may not always have the perfect words or solutions, but we can offer our presence and understanding.

The LEAP approach reminds us that meaningful change often begins with connection and trust. When we take the time to listen and show empathy, we help create a safe space where healing and growth can happen.

As we continue our journey of promoting mental wellness, be intentional about supporting one another with compassion, patience, and understanding.
